A community development approach for regenerative tourism in the Nordics: lifestyle entrepreneurs towards a placed-based research agenda - article

In an exciting development for Norreg, a new article has been published by key members of our team. Jessica, the leader of our academic group and the article’s first author, collaborated with Magdalena Falter, Norreg’s project manager, and Francesc, an academic group member, to explore the impact of lifestyle entrepreneurs and small enterprises on sustainable tourism through community development. This research, part of the Nordic Regenerative Tourism project, underscores the crucial role of small businesses in revitalizing rural communities and highlights Norreg's dedication to innovative, place-based tourism strategies across the Nordic region.

Highlights of the article:
Focus: The paper explores how regenerative tourism can benefit Nordic destinations through a community development approach, emphasizing small and micro-sized enterprises (SMiEs).

  1. Research: It suggests that tools are needed to support equitable partnerships and capacity sharing in regenerative tourism, particularly in rural Nordic communities.

  2. Gap: There is a lack of understanding on how to implement regenerative tourism in practice, and more research is required, especially on the role of lifestyle entrepreneurs in community revitalization.

  3. Contribution: The paper links community development with regenerative tourism, specifically within smaller Nordic communities.
