Experiencing the Faroes Like a Local: Oda’s Vision for Regenerative Tourism

I encourage my guests to collect loose wool from the mountains, helping protect local wildlife while creating unique mementos from their journey.
— Oda, Owner of Go Local Faroe Islands

Go Local Faroe Islands is a small tour provider run and owned by Oda. To Oda, it is important that her visitors feel like actual guests, traveling with locals or friends on the tours she provides. That’s why she organizes her tours in small groups, allowing her guests to experience both Faroese nature and local culture away from crowds or mass tourism.

“Go Local” focuses on regenerative travel and adding value to the local community, including environmental and animal protection. These values align with the NorReg project, which Oda has been participating in since the very early stages. “I am very happy and proud to be part of the NorReg project and advocate for it whenever I have the chance, encouraging other travel businesses to follow our framework for regenerative tourism,” Oda states.

Oda is a true regenerative tourism practitioner, aware of the importance of supporting local farmers. In her tours, she encourages her guests to buy from local food markets. Apart from picking up waste on the hiking trips, Oda passes along regenerative tourism values to her guests by sharpening their awareness of their surroundings.

“I have encouraged my guests to collect loose wool from the sheep in the mountains. The loose wool is bad for oystercatchers, who get it tangled around their legs. Some of my guests have created knitwear and even art from this wool and sent me pictures of it,” says Oda, Owner of Go Local Faroe Islands.
